Am I OK? is a romance comedy that recently dropped into Max’s streaming library. It is being promoted as a must-watch in honor of PRIDE month.

The film stars Dakota Johnson, who plays Lucy, a woman in her 30s struggling to figure out who she is. Early on in the plot we learn that she’s frustrated with her life and feels like she should have “figured it out” by now. The character questions if she was ever destined to find happiness in the first place.

Check out the official movie synopsis below:

“Lucy and Jane have been best friends for most of their lives and think they know everything there is to know about each other. But when Jane announces she`s moving to London, Lucy reveals a long held secret. As Jane tries to help Lucy, their friendship is thrown into chaos.”

Am I OK? Review: Stream Or Skip

Unlike He Went That Way, I was able to watch Am I OK? in one run without having to take breaks or needing to come back to it later. After watching this movie, I am quite confused as to why this movie is labeled as a RomCom.  I honestly don’t think it can even be classified as standard comedy.  At its core, this is essentially a film about a woman struggling with her own sexual identity. While a very relevant and interesting storyline, the film lacked big laugh-out-loud moments, which was a definite turn-off for me. That said, I don’t regret watching it. If you can easily relate to the struggles of coming out, Am I Ok? will definitely hit home for you — just don’t hang your hopes on it being the next Sleepless in Seattle.

Without giving away spoilers, I will say I was not a huge fan of the film’s ending. It’s a bit disjointed and feels like they just ran out of story ideas and chose to wrap it up quickly.

Spoilers ahead, don’t read further if you haven’t watched it.

The Ending Could Have Been Better

Maybe it was just me, but I feel like Jane and Lucy getting together would have created a much more substantial ending. Don’t get me wrong, I’m glad they were able to resolve their issues and jet off to London together. Unfortunately, the way this film was written led me to believe they were setting up for a classic ‘friends to lovers’ plot type – but that was certainly not the case.  Overall, the ending felt rushed and it refuses to give you the resolution that you crave.
