Netflix recently added Madame Web to its streaming library, a much-anticipated addition to the Marvel Universe. Directed by S.J. Clarkson and starring Dakota Johnson (best known for her role in the 50 Shades trilogy) as the titular character, this film promises to delve into the mysterious and psychic aspects of the Spider-Verse.

Keep in mind, there isn’t a huge connection to the Spider-Verse as this character has a largely standalone story. The story, however, very much involves a spider giving magical powers. So, we are definitely in Spider-Verse territory here.

Does Madame Web weave a captivating narrative worthy of your watch list or is it a tangled web best left alone? Read on to find out whether this latest Marvel adaptation is worth streaming or, should you skip it?

Madame Web is a film set within the expansive Spider-Man universe, focusing on the enigmatic character Cassandra Webb, also known as Madame Web. Unlike the typical action-packed narratives of other Spider-Man films, Madame Web dives into the mystical and psychic elements of the Marvel universe.

Cassandra Webb (Dakota Johnson) is a clairvoyant mutant with precognitive abilities. She is connected to a life-support system resembling a spider web, which keeps her alive and enhances her psychic powers. The film explores her origin story, which includes information about how she gained her abilities and the burdens that come with them.

As the plot unfolds, Madame Web introduces us to a diverse cast of characters. The film navigates through various timelines and dimensions, showcasing Cassandra’s role as a mentor and guide to several Spider-themed heroes. She uses her foresight to aid these heroes in their battles against formidable adversaries all while uncovering deeper threats that could jeopardize the fabric of reality itself.

With its rich narrative and complex characters, Madame Web offers a unique blend of suspense, drama, and supernatural elements.

Where To Watch

Madame Web is currently streaming on Netflix. Fans assume the film will eventually leave Netflix and shift to Disney Plus as that is typically where all Marvel movies end up.

Madame Web Review: Stream Or Skip

If you are a fan of Marvel films, you owe it to yourself to give this a watch. Will you enjoy it? Probably not.

Dakota Johnson did interviews saying this movie was a mistake and that she would never do a superhero role again. Honestly, this film was pretty far outside of her niche. Based on her library of work, she really shines in romantic comedies and thriller films.  She doesn’t give strong superhero vibes.

Honestly, I found it incredibly difficult to watch a superhero movie featuring a superhero who cannot fight. She gets endlessly slung around and can’t defend herself. Watching her use her precognitive abilities to manage a fight with a bad guy just isn’t as thrilling as watching two people actually duke it out.

The end of the film is horrible and cheesy. If you are going to watch this movie, I would stop it right after the big ‘climactic fight happens. Pretend that’s the end of the film. Otherwise, you will have to sit through a horrendously cheesy scene that features a ‘feel good’ moment featuring Cassandra and the girls she saves during the movie. It’s camp, its cheese – just skip it.

Overall, this momm totally gets why the Madame Webb movie reviews of this film were an absolute dumpster fire. I can easily say, Marvel missed the mark with this one.

So – what’s the verdict?

Skip It.
